Batch five of fills for the [community profile] threesentenceficathon! I'm having such a great time with this.

Ace Attorney, Apollo and the judge, 200 words, prompt: the judge declares the witness guilty. )

Ghost Trick/The Goes Wrong Show, Sissel and Robert, 320 words, prompt: after midnight. )

Assorted ficlets for the Goes Wrong Show, mainly Chris and Robert, 700 words total. )

I got a comment on the ficathon saying 'Your fic has actually gotten me into the Goes Wrong Show and it's also absolutely hysterical', and it made me smile so hard. By my count, I've now got... twelve or thirteen people to watch The Goes Wrong Show, I think? I'm dragging everyone into this pit with me.

K-9 author posted super cute chibi art of Kagari earlier this year, which led to conversations about what his hair colour even is anyway. This is my answer!!

Suits like a charm | K-9 | Fujimaru/Kagari | <500 words | rated G

Summary: Fujimaru dyes Kagari's hair for him.

Read it on Dreamwidth or on AO3.

Challenge #05: In your own space, create a list of at least three things you'd love to receive, a wishlist of sorts.

01. Icons Of: Huo Wensi and/or Huo Wensi/Luo Fei from the cdrama Detective L.

02. Recommendations of programs to create fanwork. This is quite a specific one because I've been itching for years to create something, from icons and graphics to fanvids because I have ideas. I used to have a program ages ago (Microsoft's Picture It!) which I created various things including graphics for the fanmixes I did way back when, but that was on an old computer and that program has long since been discontinued and defunct. I've been attempting to look for comparable programs, however my findings lead me to being confused and overwhelmed and a bit apprehensive on the legitimacy since some places are websites only instead of a program you download onto your computer, and even then I don't want to download anything that is going to take forever to load or cause problems, which I know is a risk for anything these days anyway.

So, my request is mainly for the graphic makers and vidders in fandom: what programs do you use, your pros and cons for them, how much of a learning curve there is and if there is good tutorial out there. Note that I mainly use my laptop, I don't do anything on mobile.

So, there seems to be something odd going on with Dreamwidth right now -- I can't put account links for more than one community and some of my sentences are actually disappearing when I try, no matter if I use HTML or Rich Text options. Weird. So, no links.

I've been busy busy busy, mostly writing fills for Three-Sentence-Ficathon.

So, how do you go about participating in 3SF? I mostly fill and I find it hard to come up with prompts, although I try to do some. I just go browsing through the pages reading the prompts and wait for one to jump out at me. I usually get an idea right away, then I go and write it. If it doesn't grab me immediately, I usually just skip over it. If I see a rare fandom I'm familiar with, though, I like to try and write something for it, because I know what it's like to be desperate for fic in a non-existent fandom. 3SF is a great way to fulfill those wishes.

For the prompt, any/any kissing in the rain, at [community profile] threesentenceficathon

This one can be readers' choice of fandom even though I definitely had a specific ship in mind when I wrote it. 😉

Author: Cat Moon
Words: 129
Rating: G
Summary: They don’t notice the rain, only each other
Note: In one of those weird coincidences, as I read this prompt and started writing it, "It's Just the Rain" by Journey came on randomly, lending atmosphere and title (but not thematic inspiration).

Bridgerton Season 4A was fun!

I'm not big on the Cinderella vibe, as the other stories weren't fairy tale retellings, but I'm super happy that this season is finally Bi!Benedict's turn.

This is another Goes Wrong Show fic that started life as a fill for the Three-Sentence Ficathon! My worst failure to keep to three sentences yet; this version is slightly expanded, but the original fill was still over a thousand words.

The original prompt was 'outsider POV'. I originally started thinking about using an original character, and then it hit me that, as Vanessa joined later than the rest of the company, she could be the outsider.

Title: The Outsider
Fandom: The Goes Wrong Show
Rating: G

Thoughts on Heated Rivalry

I posted my long form thoughts on Heated Rivalry earlier today on my neocities website since I watched it this month along with everyone else it seems! I'm cross posting here since I think it'd be an interesting discussion for here as well.

I've read the book it's based on, and I want to discuss the differences between them and how I think the show made changes in an impactful way. I also think some of the popularity of the show is a bit of luck/the right climate. Like I think we all needed a happy story that focused on joy/queer joy this year, and this one really delivered in a special way. It's also been really interesting watching the cast and crew be catapulted from like ordinary people to superstars over the course of a month. That's insane!

Anyway, the next part is spoilered in case you haven't seen it yet! But no major spoilers, just minor things

Read spoilers

These are my thoughts on the novel: At first glance, it reminded me so much of Until My Feet Bleed and My Heart Aches by Reiya on Ao3, which, if any of you are familiar with the Yuri on Ice fandom, is the highest kudosed fic in that fandom and has been for years. Anyway, the timeline, circumstances and ages of the characters are very similar. However, the characters of Heated Rivalry definitely stand on their own, and the story is absolutely not about figure skating unfortunately :( But I couldn't help comparing the two as I read it, and remembered having many more emotions about umfbamha, so HR kind of let me down in that regard.

However, it's overall a good story, with strong characters, and I would argue well written for the romance genre. You can tell that it's been professionally published and edited in that the plot maintains momentum and focus throughout the story. I think the characters are Rachel Reid's strong point, which is important to develop a fandom. As many people have noticed, Ilya is a fantastic/standout character. All his different and sometimes conflicting traits give him a lot of depth. He's also very funny! And I think that's another one of Reid's strong points. The novel is genuinely funny at times, and that can be really difficult to pull off.

I see the novel getting a lot of criticism for not focusing on many details outside of the main plot, but, I'd argue that's pretty typical for romance genre or any contained genre to begin with. It's not trying to be high literature. Although I haven't read any other books/romance about hockey to compare it to.

It actually surprises me that most of the main crew didn't seem to know about the hockey fiction/hockey rpf fandom's existence before the show took off?? Like I mean I'm not interested in hockey at all, but I've known for at least the last 10 years that hockey rpf is basically this giant sleeper fandom that seems to attract really high quality fanfic writers. Rachel Reid obviously knew this, but I feel like someone else on the team had to have known.

Anyway these are my thoughts on the show: Jacob Tierney put a huge amount of thought into this and managed to create a faithful adaptation of the novel that also transcends its source material.

One of the things that I noticed is that he took what seems like every opportunity to increase the tension in the story. I'll give a few examples.

The most obvious one is that Yuna becomes Shane's manager. This change not only expands the dialogue on Shane being an Asian player in the NHL but also increases the tension between him and his mom, him and his identity, and him and his professional image. This is reinforced by all the advertisements we see of him throughout the series.

Second, is the way that Ilya's relationship with his home country is more explicitely stated/addressed. It's clear in the show in a way that's not really shown in the novel that Ilya wants to go home even after his father's death despite having a terrible family, and that it will hurt him deeply to never be able to go back.

Third is how Shane is explicitly played as autistic. This does not come out as strongly in the novel but is very evident in the show. It's shown how hard it really is for him to communicate with anyone at all including Ilya.

Last is the timeline. In the novel, Shane and Ilya are hooking up with each other and other people pretty regularly. In the show, there's much larger time gaps, and at least a 2 year period where Ilya keeps pursuing Shane by texting/etc.

And this isn't even addressing the use of music and lighting/framing to increase tension as well. All this buildup makes the payoff at then end/the feeling of joy so much deeper. This same kind of framing is also used in the Skip storyline, which is so incredibly sweet and uplifting. I was actually surprised how much I like Skip in the show since I normally find coffee shop AUs boring.

Also I have to give a shoutout to the actors/intimacy team for really selling the relationships and making the sex scenes what they are, since the ones in the novel are kind of underwhelming tbh. The likes of Bridgerton has nothing on this

I'm glad the show got renewed for a 2nd and 3rd season. Although I'm concerned that neither will be able to top the first one. For me, the theme of this season was "it's worth it to allow yourself to love and be loved in the way that you desire." I think continuing to frame things around queer joy and internal struggle can make the other seasons special as well. Perhaps themes like "it's worth it to allow yourself to be happy" or "it's worth it to share your love with others" could be other worthy themes?

Anyway, if you've watched the show or read the novels, let me know what you thought. I'd love to hear!

I went on a loooong walk and it felt SO NICE!! It quietened my mind a lot, too. It's possible I've been going a little bit stir-crazy because the weather has been so dreadful for weeks, and going for a stroll any longer than a short burst hasn't really been possible in too long.

Enjoy this picture of a walk I did.... last year, elsewhere, lol. We're really into the not so pleasant season at the moment. I guess I should have been on the lookout for nice naked branches to take a picture of, maybe?! But I was just soooo happy to stretch my legs properly for a few hours I forgot to look. Saw many happy puppies being walked, too!

Trees covered in ivy with sunlight by a narrow river

Reminder to self: long walks are probably part of your writing process, and also your process of being a human being.

Been reading a bunch of manga lately that truly embrace the Rule of Cool ("Why is this even happening in this way? Oh! Rule of Cool!") and was thinking maybe that's one of the things I don't let myself apply enough in my own writing. Everything must make sense and be fully justified by the worldbuilding, plot, etc! Meanwhile I translate the K-9 profiles and it's like, "yeah his jacket stays like that thanks to the power of magic" [ that world does not have magic ] and you know what, if it's not plot breaking and remains consistent once introduced, WHY NOT! WHY NOT APPLY THE RULE OF COOL!!? XD And I guess in fanfic you're playing in a sandbox that's probably already embraced that in some form.

Anyway, just peacefully reflecting!! And plotting to keep an eagle eye on the weather reports so I don't miss any wandering opportunities coming my way, haha.

My housemates read Educational Experiences, my 'the Cornley Drama Society have an orgy' Goes Wrong Show fic, in the wake of which we had an incredible discussion on the subject. The fic itself fades to black, but we had a lot of ideas about how disastrously a Cornley Drama Society orgy might actually play out, all of which delighted me!

Discussing the hypothetical Orgy That Goes Wrong. )

For something non-orgy-related, I saw a poll on Tumblr asking 'Would you give your blorbo a gentle kiss on the forehead?', and I'm surprised by how few people are saying no! (At the moment, with around 1,000 votes, it's at 92% yes to 8% no.)

As I noted in the tags of my reblog, I'm not sure a gentle forehead kiss would be received well by most of my blorbos. Squall would find it unbearably awkward. Light would hate it and, moreover, would not deserve it. Robert Grove would in theory be fine with a forehead kiss, but he would interpret the gentleness as weakness; he'd probably start trying to coach me on giving a more powerful and therefore objectively better forehead kiss. A proper forehead kiss should ideally knock your opponent to the floor. ('Wait, the person I'm kissing is my opponent?' Yes. The forehead kiss is a power struggle that you must win.)

++ We have the official teaser for the second season of Daredevil: Born Again, which I'll be honest the only thing I care about from this is the return of Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones. The interactions between Jessica and Matt in The Defenders was truly the biggest highlight and I've always wanted more of that, and we're finally getting it.

++ I'm still not on the Heated Rivalry train, but I'm happy for all those who are enjoying it. It's just interesting how the show gained so much traction so quickly since it premiered, and really sometimes you just don't know what is really going to resonate with so many people. Perhaps it's the FOMO some have, hopping on trends and popularity of something, whatever it is every single time I see someone talking about it in the wild and not in a fandom space it's just fascinating. I get slightly taken aback because this isn't usually something that most would talk about, the show isn't made for the broader audience in mind (at least to my knowledge, it's a mature queer story with explicit scenes), so it's kind of a pleasant shock. I mean, when the Major of New York City, Zohran Mamdani, recommended the city's citizens read the book for free during the winter storm and the Prime Minister of Canada meets with the cast and pays tribute to the show? That's kinda amazing.
